Curatorial Summary

A commemorative band forged from ice, sweat, and the roar of a state that had waited a century for a champion. This piece belongs to the tradition of trophy memorials — objects that crystallize a singular moment of collective triumph into wearable form. It honors the 2005–06 Carolina Hurricanes, the team that brought North Carolina its first major professional sports championship when they hoisted the Stanley Cup on a June night in Raleigh. Every stone recalls that run: the seven-game war with Edmonton, a rookie goaltender standing taller than anyone had a right to, a captain lifting silver above his head, and 30,000 fans painting the streets red and black.

Lithic Analysis

Red-Dyed Clear Quartz — Clear quartz (SiO₂) infused with resin-based dye; channels amplified intention through the spectrum of sacrifice and passion.

Black Onyx — Banded chalcedony (SiO₂); a stone of fortitude, discipline, and unbreakable defense.

Howlite — Calcium borosilicate; white with grey veining; calming clarity in the eye of the storm.

Hematite — Iron oxide with metallic luster; grounding and heavy — the weight of the work, the grind beneath the glory.LogicRed-Dyed Clear Quartz carries the fire — the power-play intensity, the will to win, the blood and sweat of Game 7 in the RBC Center. Black Onyx forms the defensive structure — the disciplined systems, the blocked shots, the unbreakable composure of a team that never quit. Howlite represents the calm in chaos — a rookie goaltender named Cam Ward stopping 22 shots in the deciding game, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy with the stillness of a man who belonged. Hematite anchors the piece as the foundation — the weight of the work, the forechecking shifts, the early mornings, the grind that turns a roster into champions. Together they form a storm channeled into purpose — a Hurricane, caught in the hand.Archivist Field NotesCommissioned to commemorate the Carolina Hurricanes' 2006 Stanley Cup championship, North Carolina's first major pro title. The stone palette mirrors the team's signature colors — red, black, and white. The four-stone composition echoes the four wins needed to seal the Cup in Game 7. Named for the team and the spirit of a state that, on June 19, 2006, declared its place among hockey's elite — from Rod Brind'Amour's first lift of the Cup to the victory parade in downtown Raleigh.
