Curatorial Summary
THE BEARS is a lithic tribute to Shaw University—the first HBCU in the American South, founded in Raleigh in 1865. Forged in the university's signature palette of garnet, black, and white, this artifact commemorates the enduring legacy of Pro Christo et Humanitate (For Christ and Humanity). By anchoring the spirited, kinetic fire of Red Tiger's Eye against the absolute absorption of Black Onyx and the icy composure of White Howlite, the piece reflects the Bear tradition: a lineage of resilience, faith, and civil rights leadership that birthed the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. It is a wearable crest for the Shaw Sentinel who carries the torch of Ella Baker and the spirit of the founding class.
Lithic Analysis
Specimens: Black Onyx, Red Tiger's Eye, White Howlite.Composition: A high-contrast mineral suite featuring microcrystalline quartz (Onyx), chatoyant quartz with iron inclusions (Red Tiger's Eye), and borosilicate hydroxide (Howlite).
Logic
This assembly functions as a "Bear Necessity Conductor." Black Onyx acts as a light-absorbing boundary, filtering external noise and providing the defensive discipline required to hold the line in the face of adversity. Red Tiger's Eye serves as the "Garnet Battery," fueling the kinetic fire, courage, and spiritual vitality that define the Shaw legacy. White Howlite provides the "Calm Catalyst," ensuring the wearer's composure remains steady while navigating the weight of history and the demands of the future.
Archivist's Field Notes
A definitive artifact for the "Bear of the CIAA" sentinel. It carries a heavy, terrestrial energy that mirrors the pulse of the Raleigh campus and the roar of a home game at the Spaulding Complex. The contrast between the deep black onyx, the garnet-red shimmer of the tiger's eye, and the stark white howlite creates a commanding, classic aesthetic that honors the university's motto—faith and humanity in equal measure. Chosen by those who understand that the first is still leading—steady, resilient, and forever Shaw.
